Making emails blackberry friendly

By now most marketers should have at least a basic idea of how to design email to ensure it gets into, and is visible in, most users’ inboxes. Sadly many don’t, but when it comes to making sure email is suitable for viewing on Blackberrys and other mobile devices, almost everyone’s clueless.

And that’s a real problem. Especially since research shows 64% of key decision makers are viewing email on their Blackberrys. If they’re unable to read your email, you’re in trouble – for households earning over $200,000 almost 38% regularly use a mobile device to view their email.

So what can you do? Well text only campaigns seem to perform about 30% better on mobile devices. 8 point font seems to work well. Subject lines should be kept to 15-20 characters. If you can squeeze a call to action in, even better. Most people looking at email on a Blackberry, take a quick glance to decide whether it’s worth reading. If the answer is yes, most will wait and subsequently read the full email on their PC – so make sure your key message is communicated within 20-25 words. Sounds tight. It is. Tough. Get used to it.
